Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, enjoy a pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and Q&A session with your mountain guide.
After breakfast in Moshi, your mountain crew will transfer you to Machame Gate, located on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here you’ll complete registration with park authorities before beginning your trek through the lush montane rainforest. This section is rich with biodiversity—expect to see ancient trees, hanging moss, and wildlife such as colobus monkeys and tropical birds. The trail may be muddy depending on the season, but the dense jungle provides shade and moisture. By afternoon, you'll reach Machame Camp, where you’ll be greeted with a warm meal and briefing from your guide.
After a nourishing breakfast, the trail ascends through a transition zone from rainforest to moorland, marked by tall grasses and heather. The path is steeper today as you hike up to the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude volcanic shelf offering dramatic views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro’s glacier-capped summit. Along the way, you’ll see interesting rock formations and feel the cooler, drier air of the alpine environment. The day ends at Shira Camp, where you can rest, acclimatize, and enjoy a striking sunset over the valley below.
This is a crucial day for acclimatization as you follow the trail upward to Lava Tower, a towering volcanic rock formation at 4,600 meters. Though the altitude gain may cause some mild symptoms of altitude sickness, it is intentional and beneficial for adapting to the mountain. After lunch near Lava Tower, you'll descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, where strange and ancient giant groundsel trees dominate the landscape. The descent allows your body to recover while still benefiting from the earlier altitude exposure, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Overnight at the scenic Barranco Camp below the looming wall you’ll climb the next day.
Your day begins with an exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, one of the most exhilarating features on the Machame Route. Although steep, it’s a safe and rewarding scramble that gives you spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and glaciers. Once you reach the top of the wall, the trail becomes easier as you cross several ridges and small streams. This is a relatively short day meant for further acclimatization, giving your body time to rest before the summit push. You’ll reach Karanga Camp in time for a hot lunch and an afternoon of rest and rehydration.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m), then Summit (5,895m) to Millennium Camp (3,950m) After breakfast, you'll make your way to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt. The trail is mostly barren and rocky with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak to the east. You’ll arrive in time for an early dinner and rest before starting your midnight summit climb. At around 11:30 PM, your guides will wake you for the final ascent. The summit attempt begins under a sky full of stars, progressing slowly to Stella Point (5,756m) and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After a brief celebration at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain.
On your final day, enjoy a hearty breakfast and begin your descent through the montane forest toward Mweka Gate, passing waterfalls, tropical flora, and the sounds of exotic birds. This is a time to reflect on your journey and celebrate your achievement. At the gate, you’ll sign out and receive your Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificate—a proud reminder of your incredible trek. After lunch, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi for a hot shower, well-earned rest, and celebration dinner if you wish.
