The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro climbing route that approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is known for its dry climate, quiet trails, and gradual ascent profile—making it one of the best routes for climbers seeking solitude, scenic variety, and high success rates.

Unlike other routes, Rongai avoids the crowds on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. It passes through remote wilderness, alpine moorlands, and the awe-inspiring Mawenzi Peak before joining the Marangu route for the final summit push via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Perfect for both dry and wet seasons, the 8-Day Rongai Route is a fantastic choice for first-time climbers and those looking for a more peaceful Kilimanjaro experience.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, enjoy a pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and Q&A session with your mountain guide.

  • Accommodation: Panama Garden Resort / Parkview Inn
  • Meals: Dinner

After a morning drive to Rongai/Nalemoru Gate, complete park formalities and begin your trek through lush pine forest. The trail ascends gradually with views of cultivated fields and forests, home to colobus monkeys and colorful birds. Arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and rest under the stars.

  • Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs | Distance: ~7 km
  • Zone: Rainforest | Accommodation: Simba Camp

Continue ascending through moorland, where the vegetation thins and views open up. As you climb, enjoy panoramic sights of Kibo Peak and neighboring Mawenzi Peak. The trail is dry and open, giving a real sense of wilderness. Camp at Second Cave, well positioned for acclimatization.

  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hrs | Distance: ~9 km
  • Zone: Moorland | Accommodation: Second Cave Camp

Leave the main trail for a more scenic path toward Kikelewa Camp. The landscape becomes rugged with sharp views of Mawenzi. The air gets thinner as you gain altitude, and today’s hike is perfect for pacing and acclimatizing. Enjoy the peaceful campsite beneath rocky outcrops.

  • Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs | Distance: ~6 km
  • Zone: Moorland | Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp

Today’s trek is steep but rewarding. You’ll climb into the alpine desert zone, with incredible views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak looming overhead. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn, a remote glacial lake nestled in a cirque below the summit. This is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hrs | Distance: ~7 km
  • Zone: Alpine Desert | Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

This extra day is reserved for acclimatization. Take a light hike up surrounding ridges with incredible views over the saddle and down into Kenya. Returning to camp in the afternoon allows your body to adapt before summit day. Hydrate, rest, and enjoy the peaceful mountain environment.

  • Trekking Time: Optional 2–3 hrs
  • Zone: Alpine Desert | Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a windswept high-altitude desert with dramatic views. The trail is long but gentle, leading you to Kibo Hut, your base camp before summit night. Arrive early for hot meals, final briefing, and early rest before midnight wake-up.

  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hrs | Distance: ~9 km
  • Zone: Alpine Desert | Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Summit night begins at midnight. Ascend via Gilman’s Point to the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Watch the sunrise from the summit, then descend back to Kibo Hut for brunch and onward to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

  • Trekking Time: 12–14 hrs | Distance: ~20 km
  • Zones: Arctic, Alpine Desert, Moorland | Accommodation: Horombo Hut

After a hearty breakfast, begin your final descent through lush rainforest trails, surrounded by birdsong and the possibility of spotting blue monkeys or colobus monkeys along the way. The path can be muddy, especially after rain, so trekking poles are helpful. After signing out at Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate—a proud memento of your achievement. Enjoy a picnic lunch and say farewell to your mountain crew before driving back to Moshi for a hot shower, cold drink, and celebration dinner!

  • 🥾 Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • 📏 Distance: ~20 km / 12.5 miles
  • 🌿 Zone: Moorland & Rainforest
  • 🏨 Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (included)
