Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, enjoy a pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and Q&A session with your mountain guide.
After a morning drive to Rongai/Nalemoru Gate, complete park formalities and begin your trek through lush pine forest. The trail ascends gradually with views of cultivated fields and forests, home to colobus monkeys and colorful birds. Arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and rest under the stars.
Continue ascending through moorland, where the vegetation thins and views open up. As you climb, enjoy panoramic sights of Kibo Peak and neighboring Mawenzi Peak. The trail is dry and open, giving a real sense of wilderness. Camp at Second Cave, well positioned for acclimatization.
Leave the main trail for a more scenic path toward Kikelewa Camp. The landscape becomes rugged with sharp views of Mawenzi. The air gets thinner as you gain altitude, and today’s hike is perfect for pacing and acclimatizing. Enjoy the peaceful campsite beneath rocky outcrops.
Today’s trek is steep but rewarding. You’ll climb into the alpine desert zone, with incredible views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak looming overhead. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn, a remote glacial lake nestled in a cirque below the summit. This is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.
This extra day is reserved for acclimatization. Take a light hike up surrounding ridges with incredible views over the saddle and down into Kenya. Returning to camp in the afternoon allows your body to adapt before summit day. Hydrate, rest, and enjoy the peaceful mountain environment.
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a windswept high-altitude desert with dramatic views. The trail is long but gentle, leading you to Kibo Hut, your base camp before summit night. Arrive early for hot meals, final briefing, and early rest before midnight wake-up.
Summit night begins at midnight. Ascend via Gilman’s Point to the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Watch the sunrise from the summit, then descend back to Kibo Hut for brunch and onward to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
After a hearty breakfast, begin your final descent through lush rainforest trails, surrounded by birdsong and the possibility of spotting blue monkeys or colobus monkeys along the way. The path can be muddy, especially after rain, so trekking poles are helpful. After signing out at Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate—a proud memento of your achievement. Enjoy a picnic lunch and say farewell to your mountain crew before driving back to Moshi for a hot shower, cold drink, and celebration dinner!
